Not all milk comes from the same place. While peanut milk never measured up to its butter cousin, the popularity of soy and rice milk has soared. We decided to check out some vanilla-flavored versions that came off the dry goods aisle and the refrigerator shelf -- regular, light, unsweetened or infused with extra vitamins.

Silk Soymilk, Light Vanilla

Soymilk, evaporated cane juice, calcium carbonate, natural vanilla flavor, sea salt, carrageenan, Vitamin A palmitate, Vitamin D2, Riboflavin, Vitamin B12

Price: $3.29 for a half-gallon

Portion size: 8 oz

Looks/smells: Yellowish in color.

Texture/taste: Smooth and creamy.

Kimberly: This was the best of the bunch. This soymilk had a nice, clean finish and wasn't too sweet. This would be delicious on cereal or poured over a bowl of hot oatmeal.

Gretchen: I wouldn't drink it plain, because it was a little watery.

Score: 5 out of 5 lunch bags

GRETCHEN'S CORNER

When the Lunch Ladies' editor found out we were trying soy milk, she had a great suggestion: Chocolate-Banana Soymilk Smoothies. Yum! I blended a banana with 8 ounces of Light Chocolate Silk Soymilk and a handful of ice. It was super-delicious and tasted like a sinful treat. I tried the chocolate soymilk by itself, too, and now have a new addiction. It tastes like a Yoo Hoo!

Weight Watchers update: I'm working as a receptionist now and love it. It really helps me stay on track with the program, and it's great to help other members reach their goals. If you're thinking about joining, come see me on Saturday mornings at the Inwood Village location in Dallas! I'll be the one who keeps reminding everyone that I'm new :)

KIMBERLY'S CORNER

Despite getting inoculated with the flu vaccine late last year, I ended up getting the flu, which of course derailed my workout plans.

However, I'm back in the gym thanks to the prodding of my friend, Slim. In fact, she has even told me to reign it in a couple of times, saying that it's best to get fit in a moderate but consistent manner rather than become a workout extremist who burns out and then quits. We are also trying to come up with some good ideas for "fitness" trips.

For instance, four in our group our traveling to Austin together to run either a marathon or the half-marathon. We are also traveling to the Hill Country for three days of cycling in an event called Hell Week.

LETTERS TO THE LADIES

Your Corner Bakery experience on their Turkey Panini was spot on! A few days before I read your column I ordered it at their Southlake location. The only thing that saved this sandwich from the garbage pail was the crusty bread! Just like you found the limp bacon, mine was exactly the same way and made me wonder where can they find bacon as tasteless as that one. I had forgotten one previous try at their at the South Arlington location. The only thing I remember is how tasteless it was! It reminds me of food I have had in Wisconsin -- either fatty, tasteless, or both! Keep up the good work, I always look forward to your columns. -- Hugh in Arlington

The Ladies' response: Thanks for your e-mail and for validating our experience with the Turkey Panini. We say you either get the bacon right, or just don't use it. Who likes soggy bacon? Uh, no one. That's an interesting comment about Wisconsin. When I was in Des Moines, Iowa, I remember the restaurants there were fond of putting a slab of butter on top of steak. I ask you, does steak really need butter? -- Kimberly

I wanted to thank you both for the great reviews. I'm a vegetarian in Texas (a rarity! LOL) and your article has opened my stomach to a world of healthy options I never knew existed! I thought I'd let you know how appreciative I am of your work. I always look forward to seeing what you have found for me to try! Also - I'm cheap too and found last night that my Super Wal-Mart has the Boca Wraps for $2.37/box. And they are delicious! -- Bridgette

The Ladies' response: Thanks for the tip on finding Boca cheaper! Wal-Mart always as the best prices, I just don't get to it often since it's not conveniently located for me! I do go to the Neighborhood Market on occasion and will have to stock up there. -- Gretchen

I love the column and almost always try your recommendations! I wonder how the Uncle Wally muffins would taste with a little bit of fat-free (or light) cream cheese would taste? I love to put cream cheese (within reason) on muffins that have warmed a little bit! -- Rebecca

The Ladies' response: Mmm, what a great suggestion. I bet that would taste great! I need to go by Wal-Mart again and pick up some more of those muffins. -- Gretchen
