Readers have been asking us for years to try Which Wich* sandwiches, and at long last we saw that they added nutritional information to the Web site. The restaurant's unique system has customers place their orders by writing their sandwich choices on a paper bag. Everyone knows what traditional sandwiches are like: roast beef, turkey, ham. So we tried the more unique, but not-too-high-in-calories-or-fat "wiches" on the menu.

Thank You Turkey on wheats

Portion size: One sandwich
Description: It was Thanksgiving in the middle of summer – turkey, dressing and cranberry sauce. Yum! The cranberry sauce was the perfect sweet and tangy accent.
Kimberly: This is a clever idea. This sandwich would have been perfect with less bread. The bread is so thick on these sandwiches it almost doesn't matter what's inside.
Gretchen: I've never had a sandwich like this at home during the holidays, but after trying Which Wich's, I think I'll start.
Score: 5 out of 5 lunch bags

GRETCHEN'S CORNER

If you haven't tried Zoe's Kitchen on Lovers Lane in Dallas yet, you should! Zoe's features mostly sandwiches -- grilled chicken, turkey and tuna -- plus salads and some hot plates. A lot of menu items have feta cheese, which is one of my favorites because a modest sprinkling provides a lot of flavor. My current favorite at Zoe's is the Tuna Salad Sandwich. It is moist without being drenched in mayo, and according to the nutritional information on dietfacts.com, it has 272 calories, 5 grams fat, 4 grams of fiber. I also tried and loved the Greek Chicken Pita (300 cal, 8 g fat, 2 g fiber), the Marinated Slaw (47 cal, 3 g fat, 1 g fiber), the Potato Salad (149 cal, 4 g fat, 3 g fiber). Zoe's focuses on nutrition, and although the restaurant doesn't give detailed nutritional info, they do list several "Lite Meal" options that have fewer than 400 calories and 10 grams of fat. They also list "Heart Fresh Meals," "Zone Meals," and a "Protein Power Plate." More good news: Zoe's does catering and box lunches. Tell your boss to order from here instead of Corner Bakery next time!

Guacamole is the hot new condiment for healthy eaters who want real food their body can use. It’s great as a spread on a sandwich or as a dip for raw veggies. There’s a new guac blend on the market with different flavors such as classic, salsa, organic, pico de gallo and spicy. The company is asking consumers to help name the product at www.guacparty.com. Some fun facts about the avocado offered by the company include

Mexico produced 2 billion pounds in 2005.

Avocados contain lots of magnesium, vitamin E, folic acid, potassium and beta carotene.

It's the good fat. Some studies show that the oil and fat in avocados can help lower cholesterol.

It's a fruit and a single-seed berry that loses sugar content as it ripens.

LETTERS TO THE LADIES

Hi, girls! Thank you so much for your columns! I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian, so I always pay special attention to your column when vegetarian items are listed.

I want to say thank you for turning me on to Amy's products! I have tried many of the frozen ones and have loved them.

And another HUGE thanks for talking about the butternut squash ravioli meal from Lean Cuisine! I thought I would never find it in Lubbock, but Target had some. I tried it tonight, and it is absolutely delicious. I love squash anyway, and this meal is one of my new favorites!

Keep up the good work. – Gay Jones, Lubbock

The Ladies' response: Thanks Gay! I'm glad you discovered Amy’s. We have long been fans. Have you tried her new coconut Thai soup? It's really good. Lunch Ladies are also going to review Amy’s beans soon. – Kimberly

Their black bean 'burgers,' to me, are some of the best on the market. I feel like I have tried most of the veggie burgers and this brand has been consistently good/great! It beats out the heavy duty veggie brands w/ too much tofu /bulger wheat taste that people, who normally don't eat veggie all the time, might be more prone to eat if they knew this!– Barbara

Thanks Barbara for the email. I agree with you. The taste of the black bean burger is superior to the other kinds of veggie burgers out there. – Kimberly
