Man shot near Beaumont school dies

Authorities have identified a man a Beaumont school district police officer shot dead during an altercation near a school campus.
Justice of the Peace Vi McGinnis says 26-year-old Matthew Scott Beckett was shot once in the chest and once in the abdoment.
A statement issued by Beaumont school Superintendent Carrol Thomas says police Sgt. Don Gordon shot Beckett in self-defense. The 30-year law enforcement veteran has been placed on administrative leave pending completion of the investigation.
The shooting happened Friday morning near an alternative school. Assistant Superintendent Terry Ingram says Gordon intervened in a disturbance between two men when the attacker turned on the officer. District officials say students weren't involved in the shooting.
