Perry's inauguration parade canceled due to weather

AUSTIN - Gov. Rick Perry's Tuesday inauguration parade has been canceled because of a winter storm dragging freezing temperatures and ice through the capital city, an official said.
Perry's swearing-in ceremony is still planned for the south steps of the Capitol, but officials are watching the weather to see if it will be moved into the House chamber, inauguration spokeswoman Glenna Bruun said Monday.
The storm, which swept across north Texas over the weekend, moved into Austin late Sunday and was expected to continue through Monday night an into Tuesday morning.
Wet and icy conditions prevented workers from setting up bleachers along the downtown parade route, Bruun said. The parade was expected to draw up to 15,000 people.
Participants were to include marching bands from Texas A&M and Prairie View A&M universities, the Texas National Guard and the Budweiser Clydesdales.
A large barbecue scheduled for the south lawn has been moved to an adjacent street, Bruun said.
Perry, a Republican, is to be sworn into his second full term. If he serves the full term, he would be the longest-serving governor in Texas history at 10 years. He took over in 2000 when George W. Bush was elected president.
