Hints From Heloise: Don't use personal papers to mark spot in library books
Dear Heloise: I saw your hint in a column about fun things to use as bookmarks. Please add a word of caution about using such items in library books. I work in a library, and you would not believe the important papers that people leave in books when they return them.

Hints From Heloise: Can opener makes quick work of plastic packaging
Dear Heloise: Plastic packages can be extremely difficult and frustrating to open. Many packages can be safely opened using a can opener. Just use as if you were opening a can. I've found it even will cut around corners.

Hints From Heloise: purse safety, saving water, ordering flowers
Dear Heloise: When I am in a store parking lot and have to load items into the trunk, the first thing I do is put my purse in the car and lock the car. Just be sure to keep your keys in your hand or pocket. Now my purse cannot be easily snatched while I am distracted putting my bags in the trunk.

Hints From Heloise: Punch out those credit card numbers
Dear Heloise: Most people I know simply cut credit cards in half when they throw them away. As easy as it is these days to use a card without having to present it (Internet, over the phone, etc.), I take a hole punch and punch out several of the numbers before it goes in the trash. Even if all the pieces are found, the finder will not have all the numbers needed.
