Winter weather advisory issued for Dallas area

08:05 AM CST on Thursday, February 11, 2010

From Staff Reports

Forecasters are issuing a winter weather advisory for Thursday in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Up to 3 inches of snow could fall in the Dallas area, but with temperatures expected to stay just above freezing, the roads should remain clear of ice, meteorologists said.

"With temperatures right around freezing, I don’t think we’re going to have any major icing problems," said Jesse Moore, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.

The precipitation is expected to begin just after midnight tonight with a mix of rain and snow, changing to all snow after daybreak.

With an expected high near 36 on Thursday, the wintry mix won’t have much impact on travel, meteorologists said. Much of the accumulation will be on grassy surfaces, with some slush on area roads.
But the snow is expected to continue until just before dawn Friday, and with a low of 29 degrees, there may be ice on the roads for the morning commute.

"Any remaining moist on roads will freeze anfd that will cause problems Friday morning,” Moore said.

The Texas Department of Transportation will have equipment on standby if there is any ice.

"In fact, tonight and early morning tomorrow, we’ll have crews out pre-treating" the roads, said Mark Pettit, the agency’s spokesman.
