Man fatally shot by Irving police after pointing BB gun at officers
01:35 PM CST on Saturday, November 21, 2009
Irving police officers fatally shot a 49-year-old man after he pointed an air rifle at them early Saturday.
At about 3:20 a.m., police were investigating a shots-fired call around the 2700 block of West 18th Street when they came upon the man, who was carrying what was later determined to be a BB rifle, police spokesman David Tull said. Officers ordered the man to drop the gun, but instead he raised it toward them and was shot, Tull said.
Paramedics took the man to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he later died. His name had not been released.
Police determined that the man was staying with a relative on 18th Street, which is just west of Vilbig Lake in southwest Irving, and had gone outside with the gun to investigate noises.
