Alleged cockfighting ring raided in Navarro County, Texas
12:00 AM CST on Sunday, February 7, 2010
Navarro County authorities on Saturday afternoon raided an alleged cockfighting ring at a residence in Emmett, a town about 22 miles southwest of Corsicana. Navarro County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Mike Cox said about 40 people were arrested and 150 roosters were seized. About 20 to 30 people fled into nearby woods during the raid.
Cox said that about 15 roosters were found dead at the scene. The SPCA of Texas took custody of the surviving roosters, Cox said. Most of those arrested where charged with gambling, a class C misdemeanor. Cox said that as the investigation continues, some could face animal cruelty charges.
