Woman arrested in Dallas accused of training girl to be dominatrix

05:48 AM CDT on Tuesday, May 13, 2008

Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Federal prosecutors unsealed an indictment Monday accusing a woman arrested in Dallas of training her child to be a dominatrix, selling her sexual services and photographing some of the acts.

The 44-year-old mother, whose name is not being published to protect the identity of her daughter, was arrested Friday. Also charged is Todd B. Barkau, 35, of New York state, who authorities say started advertising the girl on the Internet as a 19- to 20-year-old dominatrix when she was 14.

The mother is accused of encouraging and participating in the venture to exploit the girl, who is now 20.

Mr. Barkau and the mother once lived together in Blue Springs, Mo., where the business was allegedly run.

"Barkau obtained control of a 12-year-old girl and he groomed, trained and forced her to become a sexual dominatrix," U.S. Attorney Jon Wood said at a news conference Monday in Kansas City.

Mr. Barkau was arrested near Niagara Falls and had an initial court appearance Saturday in Buffalo, N.Y.

Don Ledford, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney, said that as far as he knew neither defendant had been assigned attorneys.

Federal prosecutors, who investigated the case for nearly two years, have filed a motion to detain both suspects in federal custody without bond.
