Usual polling places may not be: Number of Dallas County sites cut
12:00 AM CST on Tuesday, November 3, 2009
Voters in today's local elections may want to check where they should vote before they head to their usual polling places.
Dallas County has reduced the number of polling places from 400 to 250 for the county's 1.2 million voters. In Collin County, voters can cast ballots at any polling spot.
Polling places for parts of Dallas County with local elections, including those for the Dallas school board, won't change. But in areas where only statewide propositions are on the ballot, fewer locations are being used to save money, said county Elections Administrator Bruce Sherbet.
Sherbet said 300,000 notices were mailed to prospective voters informing them of the changes.
Meanwhile, Collin is one of three counties – Erath, Galveston and Lubbock are the others – in a state pilot program to expand polling places.
Collin County officials say voters should enjoy the convenience of having additional choices. The setup is similar to early voting, where county residents can use any polling place.
Voters can visit the Collin County Web site, www.co.collin.tx.us, to find a polling place based on their ZIP code or see the list of all 57 sites.
