Highway 114 lanes

closed until Monday

The main lanes of State Highway 114 between MacArthur Boulevard and Belt Line Road in Irving will be closed through 5:30 a.m. Monday, the Texas Department of Transportation announced Friday.

The closure of the eastbound and westbound lanes will facilitate construction of a U-turn lane at State Highway 161.

Detours are in place and portable message boards have been advertising the lane closures, the department said.

Man held in stabbing of disabled neighbor

Police arrested a 47-year-old Dallas man who is accused of stabbing his disabled neighbor with a screwdriver Friday night.

Esau Gardner Jr. of Dallas was booked into Lew Sterrett Justice Center on one count of injury to the disabled, a class-three felony. A magistrate set bail at $100,000.

According to a police report, the neighbor, William Cantrell, 58, said Gardner came to his apartment in the 9700 block of Shepherd Road about 8:20 p.m. Friday to ask for money to buy a beer. He said that when he refused, Gardner grabbed a screwdriver and ran toward him. Cantrell said he fled to his bedroom, where he hit Gardner in the head with a metal chain and then sustained a 12-inch cut to his abdomen during the scuffle.

Both men were treated at the scene by Dallas Fire-Rescue paramedics. Cantrell told police he has pancreatic cancer and a heart condition.
