Local man studying in China dies in fall

Brown University officials say a Dallas student who was studying in China has died after falling from the rooftop terrace of a Beijing apartment building.

Officials at the Providence, R.I., university said Saturday that they learned about the death of junior Arun Stewart from Chinese authorities Friday evening.

President Ruth Simmons says in a message to the campus community that Stewart lost his footing and fell while he was attending a recent gathering of friends.

Stewart had been studying in China for a year and was pursuing a bachelor's degree in East Asian Studies.

Firefighters rescue man in burning house

Firefighters rescued a man from a smoke-filled home Sunday night after a fire started in his kitchen.

The man, whose name and age were not available, was home alone in a bedroom when the fire began about 6:50 p.m. Sunday at the home in the 10400 block of New Bedford Drive, a spokesman for Dallas-Fire Rescue said. The victim was lifeless when firefighters arrived, and rescuers quickly moved him to the front lawn where they performed CPR for several minutes, witnesses said.

After they revived the man, paramedics took him to Dallas Regional Medical Center in Mesquite, where he was being treated for smoke inhalation.

Investigators were still trying to determine what started the blaze late Sunday.
