LAKE RAY ROBERTS

Rescuers have trouble

finding drowning man

A 20-year-old man drowned Friday in a remote part of Lake Ray Roberts in Cooke County near Pilot Point after authorities struggled to locate him.

The man went under about 4 p.m., but authorities didn't make it to the scene for up to two hours, said Capt. Neal Bieler of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

It's unclear when 911 was called. Also, his friends either didn't have a cellphone or lacked service in the remote area. They were eventually located on private property on the east side of the lake near Anderson Road, Bieler said.

"There was a lot of confusion," Bieler said. "When they called into dispatch, there was a language barrier. And this is way out in the boonies."

The victim was located about 20 yards off shore in about 8 feet of water, Bieler said. Authorities had yet to confirm his name; he apparently didn't have valid ID.

A Cooke County justice of the peace took custody of the body, which will probably be taken to the Dallas County medical examiner for an autopsy. Alcohol didn't appear to play a role, Bieler said.

Shootout victim ID'd;

'key players' known

Dallas police have identified the man killed in an apparent drug-related shootout late Wednesday near Kiest Park.

Justino Maya Jr., 24, died of multiple gunshot wounds and was found in the doorway of a home on Bridal Wreath Lane.

Witnesses said a group of men was involved in the shooting. Investigators believe Maya, who was masked, had accomplices who shot into the home.

Dallas police Sgt. Eddie Douglas said no arrests have been made but that investigators have identified "key players" in the shooting.
