team up in campaign
Mothers Against Drunk Driving and Dallas Fire-Rescue announced a new joint campaign Thursday to prevent drunken driving and bring MADD's "Tie One on for Safety" initiative to a local level.
As part of the campaign, MADD is giving out red-ribbon stickers for residents to put on their vehicles as a reminder to think of alternative ways to get home before going out to drink. Dallas Fire-Rescue also will place the stickers on emergency response vehicles.

to shine again tonight
Nine lights along the southern end of the Katy Trail should be back on by tonight, city officials said Thursday.
The lights were knocked out when thieves tried to break open a wiring plate to steal copper.
Copper theft had been waning in Dallas but has increased recently as prices have begun to creep back up.
Dave Strueber, an assistant director in the Dallas Park and Recreation Department, said contractor Prism Electric has agreed to repair the lights at no cost to the city.

Hashim Anderson, who was shot about 12:30 a.m., was taken to Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, where he was pronounced dead. Dallas police Senior Cpl. Kevin Janse said detectives are interviewing witnesses, and the motive is unknown.

displaces 30 residents
About 30 people were displaced after a 4-year-old accidentally set fire to a bed, destroying two units of a condominium complex Thursday evening.
A Dallas-Fire Rescue spokesperson said nobody was injured in the three-alarm fire, which broke out about 5 p.m. at the complex in the 12000 block of Abrams Road. The American Red Cross was assisting the displaced residents.
The 4-year-old, who was playing with a lighter that started the fire, will be in the custody of his mother and will be expected to complete a juvenile fire safety program.
In July, two boys younger than 8 intentionally set a fire at the complex by throwing matches down a garbage chute; that blaze destroyed one building and caused $1.2 million in damage.
Damage estimates were not available for Thursday's fire.

Dallas police Senior Cpl. Kevin Janse said no charges were expected to be filed.
