ARLINGTON

Suspect arrested in sex assault on girl, 13

Police have arrested a man suspected of sexually assaulting a student last month at a middle school. Fredrick Ramone Wright, 34, is in the Arlington City Jail, charged with aggravated sexual assault and aggravated kidnapping of a 13-year-old girl.

His bail is set at $100,000.

The assault took place Sept. 26 at Coble Middle School in the Mansfield school district, according to police. Mr. Wright has a relative who attends the campus, said Arlington police Lt. Blake Miller. Police did not give details of that relationship.

According to police, the 13-year-old girl was walking in a school hallway when a man pulled her into a girls locker room and assaulted her. The girl and her mother went to police that day to file a complaint, Lt. Miller said.

Because of privacy laws, the incident was not made public until Friday.

School officials sent a letter to parents Friday about the incident.

COLLIN COUNTY

Lawyer not guilty of records tampering

A Collin County judge ruled this week that a Dallas attorney is not guilty of tampering with government records, a state jail felony.

James Vasilas was one of three defense lawyers indicted in late 2003 for allegedly making false statements or illegally altering or changing court documents. The other cases have been closed.

The defense attorneys said they were being prosecuted for minor clerical or procedural errors. But the Collin County district attorney's office defended its actions, saying no one is above the law.

Mr. Vasilas was accused of filing papers saying felony charges against his client had been dropped, when, in fact, the man had been convicted of a lesser charge. Mr. Vasilas acknowledged the mistake but denied breaking any laws.

Immigrant fugitives found by ICE teams

Nearly 100 illegal immigrants were arrested this week in Dallas, Denton and Lewisville by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, agency officials said Friday.

The men and women were apprehended by ICE's "fugitive operations" teams. The teams target those who've ignored deportation orders for immigration offenses under administrative law and/or who have been convicted of criminal offenses. The teams were started in 2002 but have come under criticism for the persistent backlog of illegal immigrants who qualify.

Around the nation, there are about 570,000 people classified as immigration fugitives, a decrease of nearly 25,000, ICE officials said Friday.

Of the 99 people arrested by ICE in North Texas, about a fifth had criminal convictions.

Council members on S. Africa trade trip

Dallas City Council members Tennell Atkins and Vonciel Jones Hill are traveling to South Africa for a week on a mission to build trade ties with business and government leaders.

The trip, which city officials say is being primarily funded by the private World Affairs Council, is the second foreign trade trip taken this week by City Council members – Mayor Tom Leppert visited Mexico City for two days earlier this week.

As Dallas has minimal trade relations with African nations, "South Africa, of all the African nations, is probably the one country where we have the opportunity to get investment in Texas, Dallas in particular," said Karl Zavitkovsky, Dallas' director of economic development.

Tomlin to perform at elephant Jenny event

Comedic actress Lily Tomlin will perform at a benefit in Addison on Thursday for the Dallas Zoo's lone elephant, according to local activist group Concerned Citizens for Jenny.

Ms. Tomlin will headline the event at the Addison Improv that organizers describe as an evening of "her classic comedy" to "spotlight the plight of Elephant Jenny."

This isn't the first time the actress has gotten involved on Jenny's behalf. Earlier this summer, Ms. Tomlin wrote a letter to Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert urging the city to press zoo officials to send Jenny to The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. And she later did a public service announcement.

Zoo officials previously stated that she'd be sent to the Africam Safari park in Mexico. They've since reversed that decision and will keep Jenny at the Dallas Zoo, expand her exhibit and add companions for her.

Tickets for the Improv show range from $60 to $100. The show starts at 7 p.m.

Homeless man dies when truck hits him

A homeless man was killed when he stepped in front of a truck Friday night, Dallas police said.

The man, whose name was not released because his next of kin had not been notified, walked into traffic about 6:30 p.m. on the service road of Interstate 35E near Marsalis Avenue, said Dallas police spokesman Cpl. Gerardo Monreal.

A woman driving a Dodge Ram was unable to stop, and her vehicle hit the man, who died at the scene, said Cpl. Monreal. The woman stayed until police arrived. No one else was injured. No charges are expected to be filed.

3 indicted in woman's fatal heroin overdose

A Denton County grand jury indicted three men Thursday in the heroin intoxication death of a Justin woman on May 15.

Brian Oachs, 20, of Argyle, Tyler Rushing, 19, of Fort Worth and Timothy Taylor, 23, of Lewisville all are charged with delivery of a controlled substance causing death or serious bodily injury. They remained in jail Friday in lieu of $100,000 bail each.

All three are also allegedly connected to another death, that took place Sept. 21, law enforcement officers said.

Denton County sheriff's narcotics Sgt. Jeff Davis said officers and paramedics found Jaidi Barton, 19, unconscious and nonresponsive at Mr. Oachs' house in Ponder on May 15. Mr. Rushing, who was also there, showed symptoms of a heroin overdose and was taken to a hospital for treatment, Sgt. Davis said.

Toxicology reports showed that Ms. Barton died of acute heroin intoxication.

When Mr. Taylor was arrested, investigators seized heroin and paraphernalia used to make "cheese," a mixture of heroin and nighttime pain relievers that can be lethal, Sgt. Davis said.

Mr. Oachs then moved to a house in Argyle, where a man was found dead on Sept. 21. Austin Durant, 18, of Justin showed signs of a drug overdose before his death, witnesses told law enforcement officers. Officials are awaiting toxicology reports to confirm the cause of his death.

Sgt. Davis said charges are expected once the reports are completed.

Grand Prairie police are asking for help finding a driver who struck and killed a pedestrian this week on Pioneer Parkway.

A passer-by called police about 7:45 a.m. Wednesday after spotting the body of Nina Lujan, 27, on the north side of the road, east of Great Southwest Parkway.

Ex-teacher sentenced in child porn case

A former Sunnyvale teacher was sentenced Friday to 10 years in federal prison after admitting to possession of child pornography.

Chad Michael Hutchins, 29, was arrested in June 2007 when police acting on a tip searched his Forney home and found three computers containing more than 600 images of child porn. Investigators determined that he obtained the images using file-sharing software.

U.S. District Judge Sidney Fitzwater also ordered Mr. Hutchins to serve 15 years of supervised release after his prison term ends and to register as a sex offender.

Mr. Hutchins taught computer classes at Sunnyvale Middle School and worked on the school's yearbook and newspaper and on the district's Web site.

Man killed by police on domestic call ID'd

Police have identified a man who was shot and killed this week when he confronted officers with a knife during a domestic disturbance.

Rodney Lynn Jensen, 55, was shot once in the chest Wednesday morning at a home in the 2500 block of Millstream Drive.

The police sergeant who shot him, a 22-year veteran, has not been identified. He was placed on administrative leave during the investigation.

The shooting took place about 7:45 a.m. Wednesday after the man's wife called 911 to report that her husband assaulted her.

When officers arrived, Mr. Jensen was cutting himself with a large knife, police said. He ignored warnings to drop the weapon and was shot when he lunged toward the sergeant, police said.

Mr. Jensen was taken to Medical Center of Plano, where he was declared dead.

His wife was also taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries suffered before police arrived.

WEST OAK CLIFF

Security guard shot at check-cashing store

A security guard was shot Friday afternoon during an armored truck robbery in west Oak Cliff.

The guard was in good condition at Methodist Dallas Medical Center with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

Investigators did not say how much money was taken.

The robbery occurred about 12:45 p.m. when the armored truck was making a pickup at a check-cashing business in the 3200 block of West Illinois Avenue.

Police said the four robbers were wearing ski masks, gray sweatshirts and black pants. They fled in a red Pontiac Grand Am with tinted windows, a sunroof and a rear spoiler. The car had no front license plate, police said.

A gun was recovered at the scene, but it was not immediately clear whether it was related to the robbery.

The FBI joined the investigation.
