Man who stole $1.4 million while working for Baylor sentenced to 12 years
12:00 AM CST on Thursday, November 26, 2009
A man accused of stealing $1.4 million from Baylor Health Care System pleaded guilty and was sentenced Tuesday to 12 years in prison, court records show.
Gary James Stephens, who worked in Baylor's information technology department, began submitting invoices in July 2006 from a fake company, court records show. The hospital then paid the company, "I-Tech Solutions," for services never rendered and products never purchased.
His mother, Cheryl Rankin, is also accused in the theft. Her case is scheduled for trial in December.
Stephens, 36, would pick up the checks from the hospital system and give them to Rankin, 59, according to court records. She would deposit the money into her account and split the proceeds with her son.
Stephens had originally agreed to plead guilty in exchange for seven years in prison. But a July hearing where the plea bargain was supposed to take place never happened. It is unclear why.
Attorneys involved in the case could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
Before his arrest, Stephens sold a 2005 Bentley Continental GT to a dealership before the vehicle eventually ended up in the hands of Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price. He bought the British luxury car around November 2007 for $128,000. He paid $41,700 and traded in a 2003 Aston Martin for $86,300.
Stephens bought the car with money he stole from the hospital system, Baylor officials have said. Baylor has recovered at least $300,000 in assets from Stephens.
It is not trying to recover the Bentley from Price but has already recovered money and assets that Stephens received for the car.
Price has said that he does not know Stephens and bought the car from a dealership. He also said he did not know anything about the vehicle's prior owner or the criminal investigation.
