CDC says H1N1 still widespread in 48 states
09:13 AM CST on Saturday, November 7, 2009
The 2009 H1N1 flu is still widespread in 48 states, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday.
Vaccine is still generally in short supply, though about 11 million more doses were available than a week earlier, said Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.
About 38 million doses have been manufactured, she said. As of Wednesday, 28 million had been ordered by the states and 26 million had been shipped. The number of flu-like cases reported by doctors has stayed about the same for the past two weeks, but there is no way to know whether the disease has peaked nationally, Schuchat said.
"Flu can last until May," she said. "We don't know what we will see with this virus in general."
In Texas, state officials said Friday that they had been allocated a total of about 3 million doses of H1N1 vaccine and had already ordered shipment of 2.5 million of those doses to providers.
