ARLINGTON - Freshman registration at Arlington High, it's not technically school yet, so students are not technically bound by the dress code. If they were, some girls would fail the new no cleavage rule.

There won't be any measuring to define cleavage. School officials say it's a simple rule, really. "If you can see the space between a woman's breasts, it's not allowed," said James Adams, Arlington High principal.

Arlington's superintendent says there's a simple reason behind the rule. "Let's face it. We've got people in these learning environments who are distracted by displays of too much femininity," said Mac Bernd, superintendent of Arlington High.

Senior Mat Hernandez admits current female fashion can leave him a little school dazed, and some administrators admit enforcing the no cleavage rule could be delicate. “It can be a distraction. It gets a little too low sometimes,” said Hernandez.

But most parents enthusiastically support the district's zero tolerance stand. "That's my rule, too," said Cammye McKee, parent of an Arlington High student.

Students need to be aware of lots of new rules in Arlington schools this year. No visible I-pods, cell-phones, teeth grills, and now cleavage.
