Heinz to close Dallas plant, cut 200 jobs

08:01 AM CDT on Wednesday, May 7, 2008

Associated Press

PITTSBURGH — H.J. Heinz Co. plans to close a plant in Dallas next month, affecting nearly 200 employees.

Work now done at the Porton Pac, Inc. plant will be transferred to Heinz facilities in Mason, Ohio; Jacksonville, Fla.; and Chatsworth, Calif., according to the Pittsburgh-based food company.

Officials said about 175 hourly and 20 salaried employees will be affected by the move. The company said it will work with government agencies to provide separation benefits and outplacement services.

The Dallas plant, at 11461 Hillguard Road, has been owned by Heinz since 1989. It is being closed as part of a consolidation effort. A spokesman said there are no plans to close other plants.

Several other companies have disclosed pending layoffs in North Texas.

• Citigroup Inc. notified the Texas Workforce Commission in a letter received Tuesday that it will cut 125 jobs by closing an office in Bedford.

• Silver Line Building Products LLC, which makes vinyl windows at a plant in Garland, told the commission last week that it will begin cutting 251 jobs around June 30. The company is "substantially" reducing production at the plant and expects the layoffs to be permanent.

• Origen Financial LLC said it will cease Texas operations and close its office in Fort Worth on July 1 and cut 96 jobs.
