Dallas teen hit by SUV after exiting bus
12:56 PM CDT on Thursday, May 8, 2008
DALLAS — A teenager on her way to school was struck by a vehicle after exiting a DART bus Thursday morning.
The 14-year-old girl was unconscious at the scene and was rushed to Children's Medical Center Dallas, where she was reported in serious but stable condition at noon.
Police said the girl exited the bus at Military Parkway and Urban Avenue on her way to the Village Fair Alternative School. Witnesses said the girl was clipped by the rear-view mirror of a passing sport utility vehicle.
Ernest Dexter said the girl did not use a nearby crosswalk. "This SUV was on the other side, in the other lane, and she just ran out there and he hit her," Dexter said. "She got hit pretty bad, because she went up about five feet in the air and actually did like a flip."
Dexter said the victim landed on the pavement on her face.
The driver of the SUV stopped to help. No charges are likely.
DART said it is common for Dallas public school students to use public transit to and from school. DART buses do not, however, command traffic in both directions to stop the way regular school buses do.
