Teen killed after bypassing railroad crossing arm
10:41 PM CDT on Sunday, May 11, 2008
RIO VISTA, Texas - A teen was killed after witnesses said she drove her car around a railroad crossing arm and was hit by an Amtrak passenger train in Johnson County.
Katelyn Baker, 15, had recently received her hardship driver's license. The teen was driving in Rio Vista when witnesses said they saw her drive around the crossing arms. An oncoming train crashed into her SUV, killing the Rio Vista High School student.
"There was just a big cloud of dust," said Jessica Day, who was working at a snow cone shop across from the accident.
Day said the crossing arms often come down and stay that way for five or ten minutes whether there is a train in sight or not. She also said she has seen many an impatient person drive around the arms.
News 8 witnessed a driver veer around the same crossing arms later Sunday afternoon.
"I don't know how she can feel losing her daughter on Mother's Day," Day said of Baker's mother. "It just breaks my heart."
Authorities said none of the 63 passengers on the train were injured in the accident.
