12:56 AM CDT on Saturday, May 17, 2008
DALLAS — A woman was shot Friday night while fighting off a carjacker at NorthPark Center.
The carjacker escaped and was being sought by police, who were combing the area by air and ground.
The victim told police she had been sitting in her pickup truck with the motor running at about 9:15 p.m., waiting to pick up her teenage daughter, when the assailant came up to the driver's side door and fired multiple rounds.
The woman, whose name was not released, managed to put the truck in gear and drove a short distance to the valet stand at Nordstrom's department store seeking help.
She was taken to Baylor University Medical Center for treatment, where she was reported in stable condition late Friday night.
Witnesses described the suspect as a black man in his 20s wearing a neon green shirt and blue jean shorts.
Several entrances to the shopping mall at North Central Expressway and Northwest Highway were sealed off by police as they searched for the suspect using officers on the ground and in the department's helicopter.
