Moped driver killed in crash with SUV
11:54 AM CDT on Monday, May 19, 2008
DALLAS — A moped driver died early Monday morning after a sport utility vehicle struck him while he was driving on Interstate 30, the Dallas County sheriff's office said.
The driver of the SUV, Scott Wyatt, 34, was charged with intoxication manslaughter, said Kimberlee Leach, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman.
The victim’s identity was not released pending notification of next of kin.
Leach said the moped driver was traveling at a normal rate of speed along I-30 near 1st Ave. when he was struck shortly after 2 a.m. The 60-year-old victim was taken to Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, where he later died.
The victim was driving a 1978 Motobecane bike, a type of moped that is legally allowed on the road, Leach said. Mopeds and electrical bicycles are allowed on public streets as long as they meet requirements under Texas law regarding engine size, speed and other issues, she said.
