Gas giveaway a 'blessing' for some drivers
12:28 PM CDT on Thursday, May 22, 2008
DALLAS — With the average price per gallon now up to $3.74, the lines were getting longer and longer at two North Texas gas stations giving away free fuel on Thursday.
Emma Thomas was the first in line before midnight at the Shell station in the 3100 block of Mockingbird Lane at Cedar Springs Road in Dallas.
"It's just that the economy is so bad, and gas prices are so high," Thomas said. "I was just thankful. I thank God that I saw it on television."
Thomas said she'd use her gas savings to buy groceries.
The other location for the gasoline giveaway is an Exxon station in the 3000 block of Mayfield Road at Highway 360 in Grand Prairie, where Reggie McDonald was waiting in line.
"It's a blessing to be able to come up here and get an opportunity like this, as hard as times are and as high as gas is," he said.
For Kisha Wood, the benefit was immediate. "I'm moving from Grand Prairie to Arlington," she said, "so driving back-and-forth, my car takes quite a bit of gas."
The $40 pre-paid gas card — which will buy about 10.5 gallons of regular unleaded — goes to the first 200 cars at each location from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is part of a promotion sponsored by the Verizon Yellow Pages and Superpages.com.
