11:55 AM CDT on Tuesday, September 2, 2008
DALLAS — Want a fried banana split? Some chicken-fried bacon?
They will be the featured State Fair treats this year after winning this year's Big Tex Choice Awards on Monday.
Concessionaire Glen Kusak won the Best Taste award for his bacon dish, consisting of thick, peppery bacon that is seasoned, double-dipped in batter, breaded, then deep-fried. It is served with ranch or honey-mustard sauce.
Shirley Weiss won the award for Most Creative fried offering for her mixture of banana and honey-peanut butter that is rolled into balls, battered and deep-fried. The fried banana split is topped with powdered sugar, caramel, chocolate syrup, chopped peanuts, whipped cream, banana-split-flavored ice cream bits and the traditional maraschino cherry.
The gates open for the 2008 State Fair of Texas at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26.
