Morning traffic is a rainy mess
08:23 AM CDT on Monday, October 6, 2008
DALLAS — Rain that fell on roads created a slick and messy commute in the Dallas-Fort Worth area Monday morning.
"It has certainly been a rough morning," WFAA-TV traffic reporter Alexa Conomos said. "We are seeing some of our problems clear, but still give yourself some extra time to get around today; we still have some very damp roads."
Lanes on northbound Interstate 35E just north of Interstate 635 were shut down after an accident backed up to Loop 12.
An accident at Interstate 35E south and the Interstate 30 westbound ramp blocked at least two lanes and traffic was backed up to Wycliff Avenue.
Several minor accidents on LBJ Freeway in both directions also slowed down the commute.
WFAA-TV meteorologist Greg Fields said no severe weather was expected in connection with the storms. "The leading edge may have some winds getting up to 30-35 mph or so," he said.
Rainfall totals were beginning to add up in some parts of the area at 7:30 a.m., with more than a half-inch of precipitation measured in Denton, Arlington, Burleson, and at Alliance Airport in Fort Worth.
"We're going to keep that chance of rain around here as we go through the morning and later on tonight," Fields said.
The amount of rainfall is not unusual for this time of year. Dallas had been experiencing a dry spell with rainfall 6 inches below its average annual total, the weather service said. The average rainfall in October is a little more than 4 inches.
Dallas Morning News staff writers Greg Fielder and Donnie Wyar and WFAA.com contributed to this report.
