Police: Cowboys' Adam Jones hits security guard
01:05 PM CDT on Thursday, October 9, 2008
DALLAS - Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam Jones was involved in a skirmish Tuesday night at the Joule Hotel in Dallas.
Police confirmed they were called to the hotel in downtown at 11:30 p.m.Tuesday after Jones and his bodyguard apparently got into a fight in a bathroom. They said during the altercation Jones hit the bodyguard.
A woman, sources say, was also involved.
"There was arguing that was occurring at the location, as well as a fight that occurred at the location," said Lt. Anthony Williams of the Dallas Police Department. "I believe one of the employees at the hotel called the police department."
Officers responded and interviewed everyone involved, but Williams says charges were not filed and no report was made.
"We have to have a complainant in order to file an offense," Williams said. "If an offense occurred, but after his interviews with the parties involved, there were no charges file that would have led to an offense report."
So the incident, for all practical purposes, goes away.
Several people reported seeing Jones at a hotel party hosted by rapper Ludacris, who was in Dallas promoting the movie Max Payne with actor Mark Wahlberg.
News 8 has learned that Cowboys safety Roy Williams was also at the party, but was not involved in the dispute.
NFL spokesperson Greg Aiello said he had no comment regarding the altercation.
Jones served a 17-month suspension before NFL commissioner Roger Goodell reinstated him prior to the Cowboys' season opener Sept. 7.
The suspension came after Jones had a dozen off-field issues involving police including six arrests and his connection to a shooting at a Las Vegas strip club since the Tennessee Titans drafted him in the first round in 2005.
The Cowboys traded for him in April.
Goodell was in Texas and spoke about Jones before the incident became public.
"Adam knows how much emphasis I put on making sure that he makes good choices going forward, that he avoids situations where he can reflect poorly on himself, the Cowboys or the NFL," Goodell said. "So far he seems to have been able to do that very effectively.
"I am supportive of him and am hopeful that he will be able to do that for the rest of his life. I am hoping he will not only be a great NFL player but he will continue to do the right things so he can lead a productive life off the field as well."
Then Wednesday afternoon Goodell visited the Dallas Cowboys training complex at Valley Ranch.
Goodell addressed the team after practice.
Jones was present at the meeting, according to The Associated Press.
Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips said he didn't know if Goodell and Jones met separately.
"He talked to everyone," Phillips said. "He just had some things to say to the players about the league overall and kind of what's going on, and any questions that they had. And just to come by and say hello to everybody."
Goodell wasn't made available to reporters while he was at the Valley Ranch facility.
Jones' agent, Worrick Robinson, said he had spoken with Jones on Wednesday but declined to discuss the details of their conversation. He referred all questions to the Cowboys, who have not commented.
It is also not clear if this incident violates Jones' reinstatement agreement since the NFL says the terms are "confidential."
WFAA.com's Marjorie Owens, Aaron Chimbel and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
