No changes to Hinojosa's contract in DISD review
11:20 PM CST on Thursday, December 11, 2008
DALLAS - The much-anticipated performance review for Dallas Independent School District Superintendent Michael Hinojosa lasted over three hours Thursday. While insiders said the air was serious within the closed meeting, no changes were made to Hinojosa's contract, which ends in 2012.
Jack Lowe, DISD's board president, said he believes they held the superintendent accountable for the money woes that have ensued under his charge.
"We evaluated him [and] gave him the feedback on it," he said.
Most of the feedback focused on the district's top concerns going into next year. Lowe said they discussed how to fix the financial problems that have plagued the district.
"The majority is pretty confident that we will work through that," he said.
But Board trustee Carla Ranger was in the minority during the meeting.
"He is not being held accountable; and in my opinion, the board is not holding him accountable," she said.
Ranger said the board has failed the district and the public.
"If there were employees in the same situation, there would be a different response - very clear consequences, very clear and direct responses," she said.
Hinojosa will still get his raise and the incentives that were written in his contract. After the budget mistake, he did take a five percent salary cut.
Hinojosa said he believes the evaluation went well. He also said he is ready to solve the district's problems.
Next week, Hinojosa is scheduled to give a report on the district's financial future.
