Dollar Day at the zoo attracts the crowds
12:43 PM CDT on Thursday, July 2, 2009
DALLAS - People usually outnumber animals at the Dallas Zoo but today, even more so.
It's the popular Dollar Day and the crowds already are forming.
Keeping cool is a challenge. Temperatures may top 100 degrees today.
But due to the bargain of $1 per person, a record for attendance at the zoo may be set.
Some began lining up at 7:30 a.m. this morning.
Families have been pouring in ever since, peering into popular exhibits, like the warm-weather penguins.
Zoo goers can take advantage of misting stations and beverages going for $1 each.
There are also a few air-conditioned buildings at the zoo.
Kimberly Crooks took her daughter, Taylor, to the zoo today for the first time.
"It's great but it is very hot today. We'll go when she starts to get overheated... but we'll be here for a while," Crooks said.
Last year, several people suffered from heat exhaustion.
That's why zoo officials are reminding everyone to stay hydrated and to take advantage of shady spots along the trail.
The auditorium has been set up as a First Aid station.
While it's $1 to get in today, parking does cost $5. The parking lot had filled up by midday and zoo officials were encouraging visitors to take DART.
