City's furlough days kick in this holiday weekend
10:12 PM CDT on Saturday, July 4, 2009
This holiday weekend will be longer than usual for people using Dallas city services like pools, rec centers and libraries.
That's because this is the first furlough day weekend caused by the city's severe budget crunch.
On a hot holiday weekend swimmers want the city's 21 pools open every day.
But just three will open Friday because it's a city holiday and all pools and spray parks close Monday for the furlough day to save money, much to the disappointment of those who want to cool off.
As one young girl said at the Samuell Grand pool, “We don't really want it to close because it's the pool that we go to a lot and we really like this pool.”
Those looking to work out at recreation centers will find them closed Friday through Monday.
That means parents like Chris Rodgers must look for other activities for their children. “The rec center is not open so it causes me not having something to do, her not having something to do and that's the whole purpose," Rodgers said.
Libraries won't be much of an option.
They're closed Friday, Saturday and Monday.
Those with regular Sunday hours will open.
The city will save $1.7 million with furlough days this weekend and Labor Day.
And at least four more are planned in the year ahead, according to Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway. “This is something that we all have to just kind of tighten up the ship and deal with just through these tough times.”
Not all city employees will be taking their holiday and furlough days this weekend.
Garbage and recycled materials will be collected as scheduled for residential customers both days.
