Texas agency fires three over Fort Worth gay bar raid
12:54 PM CDT on Friday, August 28, 2009
FORT WORTH — The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission has fired three employees in the wake of a June 28 raid on a gay bar in Fort Worth.
The police action at the Rainbow Lounge left one man seriously hurt.
TABC, the state agency involved in that raid, announced Friday morning that it has fired three of its agents and disciplined two others.
The TABC and Fort Worth police have been under fire since the raid for the way it was carried out.
TABC, which regulates how alcoholic beverage laws are enforced, said Friday its people went too far.
An internal investigation of the raid found numerous agency rules were broken. As a consequence, TABC said agents Jason Chapman, Christopher Aller and Terry Parsons have been terminated.
One of their supervisors, Lt. Gene Anderson, will be suspended without pay for three days. He will also be on probation for inadequate oversight of his agents.
TABC Capt. Charlie Cloud will receive a reprimand for inadequate oversight.
One of the six people arrested on that June night, Chad Gibson, suffered a serious brain injury and is recovering.
Additionally, TABC agents will revise their use of force policy and receive more cultural diversity training. Agents already get some training regarding sexual orientation, but more will be added.
The agency says these are the first steps it is taking in response to the botched raid, and promised they won't be the last.
