Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison puts Virginia house on the market
04:46 PM CDT on Thursday, August 20, 2009
WASHINGTON – Looking for a deal on a house in suburban Washington? Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison – aiming to move to the Governor's Mansion – is selling her 4,300-square-foot house in McLean, Va.
And with plans to quit the Senate soon, she has slashed the price.
"She's no longer going to be in the United States Senate. She's coming home to Texas. That's why it's for sale," said gubernatorial campaign spokeswoman Jennifer Baker.
The senator's asking price is $1.45 million – $150,000 less than she and husband Ray Hutchison paid in May 2006, and $345,000 less than they were asking a year ago.
And that price probably isn't firm. The listing describes a "motivated seller" seeking "all offers."
"The market is different than it was then," Baker noted.
The home is set amid the rolling hills of horse country. It's a 4-bedroom brick Colonial on 0.6 acres, on a wooded cul-de-sac, offering 4½ baths, four fireplaces, high ceilings, a kitchen island, library and 1,372-square-foot deck.
Marketing photos reflect décor that ranges from bright red comfy chairs and glass dining table to foosball in basement.
The Hutchisons' main residence is in Dallas' Preston Hollow. When they bought the McLean house three years ago, the senator sold a townhouse that is walking distance from the Capitol, trading convenience for a more family-friendly spot a half-hour drive from the office.
Plans to put children Bailey and Houston in local schools changed, as did her political ambitions.
"The family lives in Dallas. The children go to school in Dallas," Baker said.
Multiple Listing Service records show the Hutchisons began trying to sell the house a year ago, asking nearly $1.8 million. They relisted it last month.
"She was planning to come home to run for governor," Baker said.
