Rangers 8, Rockies 4

Minor leaguer Chad Tracy, the son of Colorado bench coach Jim Tracy, hit a seventh-inning grand slam to help the Texas Rangers defeat the Rockies in Surprise and win their sixth consecutive exhibition game.

Jim Tracy, who has managed the Los Angeles Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates, was in the Colorado dugout for the home run.

"It was a great feeling," said Chad Tracy, who played for Bakersfield and Frisco last year. "Any time you come up here as a minor leaguer, you want to make a great impression. ... I didn't look over there when I hit it. I showed some etiquette and looked straight forward."

Kevin Millwood had his longest outing, going six innings and allowing three earned runs.

Andruw Jones made his first appearance with the Rangers since March 13. He had a double in two at-bats.

Reliever C.J. Wilson made his first appearance since March 14. He struck out two and walked a batter in one inning.

Today's game

vs. Los Angeles Dodgers, 3:05 p.m., Camelback Ranch

TV/radio: Fox Sports Southwest; KRLD-FM (105.3)

Rangers' probable pitchers: Luis Mendoza, Warner Madrigal, Josh Rupe, Frank Francisco

My favorite baseball memory: Brandon McCarthy

Brandon McCarthy has something every major leaguer dreams of – a World Series ring.

While McCarthy didn't play for the Chicago White Sox in the 2005 postseason, he went 3-2 in 12 games that year, posting a 4.93 ERA.

He also got to travel to the postseason games, and was with the White Sox when they clinched the title in Houston.

"I technically had never won anything, and to be part of a World Series team my rookie year was pretty special. It was really weird, because you grow up watching it, and it really just felt like regular baseball games. Then, at the end, you're celebrating. We never clinched anything at home, and we never got to hear that roar. But it was still a lot of fun, going back to the hotel and celebrating afterwards."

New bullpen candidate?

The Rangers may have an answer in their search for a long reliever.

Jason Jennings said he'd be open to starting the season in the bullpen if his arm isn't in condition for him to be a starter. The right-hander threw two innings in a minor league game Friday and is scheduled to throw 65 pitches in a game Tuesday.

Manager Ron Washington doesn't want to put too much on Jennings, who had flexor tendon surgery in May.

"As long as he's healthy, it's some great depth to have," Washington said.

Stretching out

Relievers Warner Madrigal, Josh Rupe and Frank Francisco could each see extended action in today's game against the Dodgers.

Luis Mendoza, who has recovered from a blister on his right index finger, will start and throw 50 pitches.

Madrigal, Rupe and Francisco could each see two innings. All three are scheduled to throw around 35 pitches.

Briefly ...

The Rangers signed free-agent reliever Jimmy Gobble to a minor league contract. The left-hander was released Friday by Kansas City. ... Michael Young took the day off and won't play again until Tuesday. ... Scott Feldman is scheduled to throw 90 pitches in a minor league game today. ... Derek Holland pitched in a Triple-A game Saturday, allowing a run on two hits in four innings. He struck out three and walked two.

Celebrity sighting

Hollywood invaded Surprise on Saturday as movie star Owen Wilson visited the Rangers.

The Dallas native started the day by watching batting practice and ended it sitting behind team president Nolan Ryan during the game against Colorado. In between, Wilson visited the locker room and sat in the bullpen during the first part of the game, wearing a Rangers cap.

The Dallas native was researching for an upcoming role in which he'll play a left-handed pitcher.

"He was funny and he was up for our banter and whatever," reliever C.J. Wilson said. "We were trying to give him some inside lingo. It was cool. I met his brothers maybe a year ago, when they threw out the first pitch."

According to imdb.com, Wilson is scheduled to star in a James Brooks movie with Paul Rudd and Reese Witherspoon as a baseball player vying for Witherspoon's affection. The movie is tentatively titled How Do You Know?
