Francisco to 'amp it up' today in bullpen session

ARLINGTON – Saturday came and went, and Rangers closer Frank Francisco was still on the active roster.

It may have come as a surprise to some, but not to manager Ron Washington.

"Sorry you can't write he's going on the DL," Washington said before the game.

Francisco didn't throw Saturday but will 'amp it up' in a bullpen session Sunday, Washington said. The Rangers will reassess Francisco's situation Tuesday.

Francisco has not pitched since June 3 because of tightness in his right shoulder.

The saving grace for the Rangers is that they haven't really needed Francisco. The bullpen came into Saturday's game having pitched seven consecutive scoreless innings, and the team had posted back-to-back shutouts.

But that doesn't mean Washington isn't looking forward to getting a healthy Francisco back.

"Of course we miss Frankie," Washington said. "But we're a team. Other people have to step up. If we had a healthy Frankie Francisco, that makes our bullpen great. Right now it's good."

Catchers progressing: Catchers Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Taylor Teagarden came into Saturday's game with a combined 32 RBIs, putting the Rangers in a tie for fifth in the American League in run production by catchers.

But Washington said he is more pleased with how Saltalamacchia and Teagarden have worked with the pitchers and blocked balls behind the plate. They had also allowed 32 stolen bases coming into Saturday, the fifth fewest in the AL.

"We're not going to let passed balls get by," Saltalamacchia said. "There's only so much we can do about the running game, but we've got to do our best. We haven't really focused on the offensive part of the game. The hitting comes second right now."

Coming into Saturday's game, the duo had combined for four errors and one passed ball.

Holland targets 100: Derek Holland's start today will mark his first chance to throw more than 100 pitches in a big league game.

Holland threw 91 pitches in 4 2/3 innings in his last outing, against Boston.

"I'm not on any kind of pitch limit," said Holland, who is 1-3. "I would love to go over 100 pitches. I know I can do it. I just want to because that means I'm pitching deeper in a game."

Holland said he isn't worried about pitching on eight days' rest. Holland has thrown two bullpen sessions this week to keep fresh.

Strength in the starting five: Vicente Padilla's victory Friday night made him the fourth Rangers starter with at least five victories this season, joining Kevin Millwood, Brandon McCarthy and Scott Feldman.

The Boston Red Sox are the only other team with four starters with at least five victories. Last year, the Rangers had four starters win at least five games.

Briefly: The Rangers said they hope Justin Smoak can return to the Frisco lineup in seven to 10 days. Smoak has been sidelined with an oblique strain.
