Oct. 10, 1970: Texas 41, Oklahoma 9
Hero: Six Longhorns scored touchdowns in an easy UT victory. Dallas Morning News reporter Sam Blair wrote that the Longhorns "staggered for awhile, but once they started stampeding the Sooners were helpless to stop them." Notable: Oklahoma kicker Bruce Derr kicked a 51-yard field goal, a Sooner record, for the first score in the game. This was UT coach Darrell Royal's 12th win in 14 tries against the Oklahoma. OU coach Chuck Fairbanks switched his offense from the Veer T to the Wishbone T to try to surprise Texas.
Oct. 9, 1971: Oklahoma 48, Texas 27
Hero: Oklahoma's Greg Pruitt rushed for 189 yards and 3 TDs on 14 carries – in the first half. Dallas Morning News reporter Sam Blair wrote that Pruitt "treated an overflow Cotton Bowl crowd of 73,850 to perhaps the finest first half any runner ever staged in the storied stadium." Notable: UT quarterback Donnie Wigginton was knocked out of the game in the third quarter with separated ribs.
Oct. 14, 1972: Oklahoma 27, Texas 0
Hero: Oklahoma's Greg Pruitt rushed 11 times for 81 yards and a touchdown. Oklahoma would rush for 245 yards on the day. Notable: UT had not been shut out in 100 games dating to a 13-0 loss to LSU in the 1963 Cotton Bowl. Texas committed three turnovers in the fourth quarter.
Oct. 13, 1973: Oklahoma 52, Texas 13
Hero: Oklahoma split end Tinker Owens caught TD passes of 40 and 63 yards. Sooners coach Barry Switzer said after the game that the UT defense gave Oklahoma plenty of room to throw deep. "We did something we haven't done before - throw the bomb," Switzer said. Notable: Oklahoma's 52 points were the most scored by the Sooners in the rivalry. ... Dallas Morning News reporter Walter Roberton termed the game "Black Saturday" for UT. UT coach Darrell Royal admitted after the game that the Longhorns "came unglued" during the second half. The Sooners threw the ball just eight times, but wound up with 225 passing yards.
Oct. 12, 1974: Oklahoma 16, Texas 13
Hero: Lee Roy Selmon jumped on Earl Campbell's fumble at midfield midway through the fourth quarter with the game tied. Sooner kicker Tony DiRienzo made a 37-yard FG with 5:25 left to play to give the Sooners the 16-13 advantage. Joe Washington rushed for 122 yards for OU. Notable: Oklahoma, favored by 20-plus points, entered the game ranked second nationally behind Ohio State and had averaged 54.3 points and 584.3 yards of offense in its three previous games.
Oct. 11, 1975: Oklahoma 24, Texas 17
Hero: OU's Horace Ivory rushed 33 yards for the winning TD with just more than five minutes remaining. Notable: The Sooners' victory was their 25th straight. Barry Switzer upped his record to 26-0-1 as OU head coach.
Oct. 9, 1976: Oklahoma 6, Texas 6 (tie)
Hero: UT's Earl Campbell rushed for 91 yards, but failed to score. Notable: This was the third tie in series history. Dallas Morning News reporter Sam Blair thought the game boring and wrote it was like "watching people walk around with their shoelaces tied together."
Oct. 8, 1977: Texas 13, Oklahoma 6
Hero: Third-string quarterback Randy McEachern entered the game after injuries to starter Mark McBath and backup John Aune. McEachern took Texas on an 80-yard TD drive before the first half ended for UT's only touchdown. Oct. 7, 1978: Oklahoma 31, Texas 10
Hero: OU's Billy Sims rushed 131 yards on 25 carries. He also scored two touchdowns. Sooner quarterback Thomas Lott was injured in the fourth quarter and replaced by sophomore J.C. Watts. Notable: OU entered the game ranked No. 1. The win was OU coach Barry Switzer's fourth in six tries against Texas. Switzer awarded game balls to each Sooner defender after the game.
Oct. 13, 1979: Texas 16, Oklahoma 7
Hero: The Longhorns' defense allowed just six first downs and 158 total yards to the Sooners. Jam Jones rushed 27 times for 131 yards for Texas. Notable: After the game, Texas safety Ricky Churchman said, "We've got the defense, baby. We just intimidated them!" Texas governor Bill Clements told the Longhorns in their locker room that with their win, he had won a buffalo from Oklahoma governor George Nigh. Clements said he would invite the Longhorns to the governor's mansion in Austin for a barbeque.
