OU's run continues in Red River shutout, 12-010/11/2004 By BRIAN DAVIS / The Dallas Morning News Texas players talked about bringing a tougher attitude into Saturday's SBC Red River Shootout. All Oklahoma needed to bring was running back Adrian Peterson. The freshman from Palestine, Texas, piled up the third-highest rushing total in Texas-OU history as the No. 2 Sooners posted a 12-0 victory before a Shootout-record 79,587 at the Cotton Bowl. The No. 5 Longhorns had not been shut out since 1980. Texas hadn't gone scoreless in this game since 1972.

The Sooners (5-0, 2-0) celebrated by planting an OU flag at midfield, mugging for cameras and flashing the downward "Hook 'em, Horns" hand gesture. "I can't wait for next year," said Peterson, who grew up rooting for Texas. Peterson rushed for 225 yards on 32 carries. Oklahoma relied on the toss sweep, but offensive coordinator Chuck Long said the Sooners used a new counter play and some new formations. Defensive coordinator Brent Venables unveiled several new blitzes. Texas' rushing offense, ranked first nationally, managed a paltry 154 yards, and senior Cedric Benson had just 92. Quarterback Vince Young was 8-for-23 for 86 yards and was sacked three times. When asked if Venables did anything the Texas coaches hadn't seen before, Texas coach Mack Brown said: "No. Not at all." Benson said: "It's a great title fight every year, and somebody's got to fall. I guess they just had a better game plan."
