UNIVERSITY PARK – Texas A&M's Donald Sloan and Derrick Roland, playing in their hometown for the first time since high school, poured in career-highs Monday night to lead the Aggies to an 80-68 win over SMU. Sloan scored 16 of his 24 in the first half and Roland added 21, taking over in a key second-half stretch. The Seagoville products played in front of a large group of friends and family – not to mention thousands of Aggies who made their maroon presence felt at Moody Coliseum. A&M (2-0) hadn't played here since 1996. Even Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett, a former Aggie, attended. "I plan on asserting myself a lot this year offensively," Sloan said. "I think being at home really sparked [Roland]." The third senior starter from the Dallas area – Bryan Davis of Grand Prairie – got into foul trouble, but had nine points and a team-high six rebounds. Mouhammad Faye's 21 points and Paul McCoy's 20 led the Mustangs, who climbed back into the game after A&M streaked to a 10-point halftime lead after a slow start, and then built it to 14. SMU (0-2) cut the deficit to four after Papa Dia hit from mid-lane, forcing A&M coach Mark Turgeon to call a timeout. But that's when Roland took over, scoring 10 of A&M's next 11 points, including two three-point plays. Nathan Walkup drilled a 3-pointer, and A&M was back in control. SMU couldn't break through, with Derek Williams missing two foul shots with SMU down six and A&M getting 16 points off 13 SMU turnovers. "When we wanted to run a play, we didn't always execute like we needed to," SMU coach Matt Doherty said. Area products dazzle in Texas A&M win over SMU
