SAN ANTONIO – For the second time in training camp, Leonard Davis took a few turns at left tackle in one-on-one pass rushing drills. "It's all right," said Davis, who played left tackle from 2004 to '06 with Arizona but played exclusively right guard since joining the Cowboys in 2007. "Just kind of an insurance policy, because things can happen. It's just preparing for the worst-case scenario." The Cowboys are unsure about backup tackles Doug Free and Pat McQuistan behind Flozell Adams and Marc Colombo. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones said moving Davis to left tackle was a possibility down the road when the club signed him. "I guess you've got to put the best player out there," Davis said. "Obviously that would be me, and that's that." ■ Happy birthday: Before Saturday's morning practice, a group of fans sang "Happy Birthday" to Bobby Carpenter, who turned 26. Later, coach Wade Phillips had good things to say about Carpenter, who is expected to hold the nickel linebacker job after not playing much his first three seasons. "He looks good in the run, pass coverage looks good, he knows what to do, and that's a key thing," Phillips said. "We put him in one position for awhile. He's been physical, athletic, all the things you're looking for in a linebacker, so I look for Bobby to have a good year." ■ One hand is enough: Before every practice, rookie DeAngelo Smith fields punts from the Jugs machine. On Saturday, he fielded some one-handed while holding a football in his opposite hand. "It helps you stay square as you catch the ball without turning your shoulders," Smith said. Smith said he was aware of the juggling act Adam Jones performed in camp last summer, holding five balls while catching a sixth punt. Smith said he once held five footballs at once in college. "I've got to get better at catching one," Smith said, "I'll catch six later." ■ Getting a bonus: With third-rounder Robert Brewster the only rookie not to sign a contract, the Cowboys have doled out guaranteed money totaling $3.47 million to their other 11 selections. Third-round pick Jason Williams received a $703,250 signing bonus as part of a four-year deal that includes $880,000 in guaranteed money, according to NFLPA figures. Stephen McGee received a $532,000 signing bonus, followed by Victor Butler ($498,540), Brandon Williams ($464,000), Smith ($193,750), Mike Hamlin ($160,000), David Buehler ($148,500), Stephen Hodge ($97,000), John Phillips ($78,250), Mike Mickens ($55,000) and Manuel Johnson ($51,750). ■ Briefly: With backup guard Montrae Holland missing practice for personal reasons, rookie free agent Greg Isdaner saw work with the second team at left guard. Holland is expected back today. ... Former Cowboys Leon Lett, Erik Williams, Robert Jones, Kevin Smith, Kelvin Martin and Kevin Williams attended Saturday's afternoon practice, which was held in front of 13,708 fans – a San Antonio training camp record. The previous high was 13,539 on July 28, 2007. Davis, Dallas Cowboys prepare for 'worst-case scenario'
