'Knocks' reveals whining rookie, camp drama
12:38 AM CDT on Thursday, August 21, 2008
Someday Martellus Bennett may look back at Wednesday night's Hard Knocks and laugh at being portrayed as a petulant child unwilling to follow a simple direction. The Cowboys can only hope their second-round draft choice sees the light before it's too late.
Capturing Bennett's silliness was vintage Hard Knocks. It wasn't a player clowning for the camera or Jerry Jones playing to one. It was tight end coach John Garrett asking wannabe NFL tight end Bennett to tuck in his jersey during practice and Bennett making all kinds of excuses not to. Garrett tried to explain an untucked jersey would be easier for a defender to grab and make a tackle. "I can't play like that," replied Bennett, who later identified himself as having been "one of the best [college] players in the country."
Bennett might wish for anonymity afforded a linebacker whom assistant Reggie Herring identified as "being a bum the whole camp."
Episode 3 of the season was the best to date as it exposed more inner workings of training camp.
Defensive coordinator Brian Stewart's tirade against his lackluster unit was good theater. Watching rookie Mike Jenkins struggle in a preseason game prompted secondary coach Dave Campo to say the first-round pick had "lost his mind."
The best off-field scene captured a glimpse of DeMarcus Ware playing "head, shoulders, knees and toes" via computer with his adopted daughter. "A blessing," Ware called the baby he and his wife desperately wanted.
One of these days, Ware should have a talk with Bennett.
