SportsDay's excellence remains one constant in the ever changing wide world of sports. For a record 25th consecutive year, America's sports editors have voted SportsDay's daily and Sunday sections to be among the top 10 in the country. The Dallas Morning News' SportsDay remains the only sports section to achieve the prestigious daily double every year since the Associated Press Sports Editors organization switched its annual contest to the present format in 1983. The APSE does not rank the top 10. It releases the names of the top 10 newspapers in alphabetical order. There are four circulation categories. SportsDay is judged in the largest, the 250,000 and above circulation grouping. Results of the judging in the annual contest were released last week in Orlando, Fla. "A lot has changed over the last 25 years in Dallas sports and the newspaper business, so it says a lot that we've been able to keep the section at a high level," said Bob Yates, The News' deputy managing editor for sports. "I'm really proud of our staff," he added. "They are real pros – great writers and smart editors. We are lucky enough to have some of the best people in the business working for us." The Boston Globe, Washington Post and Kansas City Star were the only other major circulation newspapers to have their daily and Sunday sports sections ranked in the top 10 for 2007. The Star also was recognized for a top-10 special section, making it the only newspaper in the top circulation category to win APSE's "Triple Crown." SportsDay's special section entry, Texas Golf 2007, won an honorable mention. SportsDay has won 17 Triple Crowns. "There's not a sports lover in the greater Dallas area who doesn't agree with APSE that SportsDay deserves to be the most recognized and awarded sports section in the United States," said Jim Moroney, publisher/CEO of The News. Major newspapers to win at least one top-10 daily or Sunday honor include: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Baltimore Sun, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald, New York Daily News, Newark Star-Ledger, Orlando Sentinel, San Jose Mercury News and USA Today. The San Antonio Express-News was the only other Texas paper to rank in the top 10. Its Sunday section was honored in the 100,000 to 250,000 circulation category. Other Texas papers receiving honorable mention: the Abilene Reporter-News (Sunday and special section), Galveston County Daily News (special section), San Angelo Standard-Times (special section), Lubbock Avalanche-Journal (special section), San Antonio Express-News (daily), Austin American-Statesman (daily and special section), Fort Worth Star-Telegram (Sunday) and Houston Chronicle (Sunday).
