Women's basketball final has lots of luster
08:59 PM CDT on Friday, August 27, 2004
ATHENS, Greece – Moments after the U.S. women's basketball team fended
off Russia, 66-62, in the semifinals Friday, center Lisa Leslie was
asked about a potential gold-medal showdown with unbeaten Australia.
"That's who we should play," Leslie said. "That's who we want to play.
They want to play us, so let's have it out."
Australia did its part later Friday, beating Brazil, 88-75, to set up
today's finale, one that Aussie center Lauren Jackson has openly pined
for during most of the Olympics.
Jackson, the reigning WNBA MVP, was more contrite Friday, saying: "The
American team is the best in the world. I think if we stop their fast
break, we have a chance."
If the 2000 gold-medal game in Sydney is any hint, don't expect
Jackson's play against the two-time reigning champions to be as tame as
her words. During the final minutes of Team USA's 76-54 romp, a
frustrated Jackson pulled the hair on the back of Leslie's head. It
turned out to be a hair extension. Jackson held it up and waved it like
a trophy.
"You can have it," Leslie says she told Jackson that day. "I'll just
take the gold."
