Tal Morrison places $25 ad in Runner's World magazine, announcing the first Dallas Marathon. Eighty-two runners from across the country compete. John Lodwick, a former Dallas Theological Seminary student, sets men's overall course record with time of 2 hours, 12 minutes, 18 seconds. Race moves from Saturday to Sunday. Starting location is changed to Dallas City Hall. Tragedy strikes marathon as Edwin Brown of Dallas collapses and dies of a heart attack about 10 miles into the race. Drug testing for top finishers begins despite initial controversy. In an effort to increase the marathon's national prominence and attract more elite runners, the race board decides to offer prize money. After 1995, board decides to pull the money but begins process again in 2003. Marathon begins using TIRIS, a radio frequency identification system, to time runners to the millisecond. To compensate for its growing size, the race's starting point is moved to American Airlines Center. Most successful marathon in history, with more than 3,800 runners and 3,500 relay race competitors.
