Jacquline Nyetipei had a baby six months ago.

Sunday, the 23-year-old from Kenya won the women's half marathon title at White Rock.

With temperatures in the 40s and winds gusting at 10 to 15 mph, Nyetipei finished the 13.1-mile race in 1 hour, 11 minutes, 45 seconds.

"It was hard," Nyetipei said. "It was really cold."

Rose Kosgei of Kenya won the women's title last year in 1:14:19. She ran faster than that Sunday but settled for second with a time of 1:13:22.

Nyetipei took three months off from running before having her first child, a boy. One month later, she started running again.

"Starting again was very hard," she said.

Nyetipei trains in Las Cruces, N.M., and trains with Hyvon Ngetich, who placed fifth in the women's half marathon Sunday. In October, Ngetich won the Spira "Defy the Ban 10K" in El Paso in 30:26.4 – five seconds off the world record. Nyetipei finished second in that race in 31:31.4.

"I thought Hyvon was going to win today," Nyetipei said.

Everlyne Lagat of Kenya placed third Sunday in 1:13:24. She is the sister of Bernard Lagat, the 2007 world champion in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters.

Ridouane Harroufi, a 26-year-old professional runner from Morocco, won the men's half marathon in 1:03:03, surging ahead of Kimutai Kiplimo of Kenya in the final 500 meters. Kiplimo was second in 1:03:06.

"I felt good," Harroufi said. "It was very cold and very windy."

When he was younger, Harroufi trained with Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj, the world record holder in the 1,500 (3:26.00) and mile (3:43.13). That has paid big dividends.

Harroufi, who now trains in Albuquerque, N.M., owns a personal best of 1 hour, 1 minute in the half marathon. He finished 10th at the 2003 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. And last month, he won the Applied Materials Turkey Trot in San Jose, Calif., by running five kilometers (3.1 miles) in 13:37.
