Motorcyclists lobby at State Capitol
12:03 PM CST on Monday, January 26, 2009
Hundreds of motorcyclists descended on the State Capitol Monday to lobby lawmakers on a number of issues they say are important for motorcycle riders.
The bikers, who come from across the state -- want their voices to be heard and rallied at the south steps of the Capitol.
The group also visited lawmakers, talking to them about legislative priorities, including tougher penalties for those who injure or kill motorcyclists and a looser helmet law. Current law does not require adults to wear helmets, but you must have proof of safety training or special insurance.
The bikers say it's unfortunate they have a bad reputation and are just as careful on the road as anyone else.
"Even though we're club riders -- like me myself I'm professional I work in the medical field -- don't judge me by what I wear or what I do," said Daniel La Costa, Jr., motorcycle rider.
According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, the number of deaths on motorcycles was about 35 times the number of people killed in cars.
Recently, some lawmakers have discussed removing the motorcycle helmet exemption and making them mandatory for all riders. The bikers lobbying at the Capitol say they'll work hard to make sure that doesn't happen.
