Texas National Guard marches to honor fallen in Austin
12:02 PM CDT on Friday, May 2, 2008
The Texas National Guard held its second annual March for the Fallen Friday morning.
The group marched along the Hike and Bike trail at Lady Bird Lake and MoPac.
They went six miles to the Capitol to honor members of the guard who lost their lives in the Iraq war.
Organizers said this year’s turnout was much larger than expected.
Not only did Guard members take part - but members of the Air Force and civilians did as well.
Since the Iraq War began more than 4,000 U.S. military members have died.
National Guard Sergeants said some of those that marched Friday morning were expected to be deployed to Iraq over the next few months.
"This is also a walk for them as well. To show them that we support them as well -- to show them we support them in their ongoing mission here in Texas and throughout the World," said National Guard Spc. Stephen Kropog.
"We're here to support the soldiers and in honor of those who lost their lives, given their lives for our country, for our freedom," said civilian marcher Eric Skotak.
The marchers paused at the 36th Infantry Division Monument at the Capitol before returning to the starting point at Lady Bird Lake.
