UT Remembers honors students, faculty, staff lost last year
06:38 PM CDT on Friday, May 2, 2008
Friday was a day of remembrance on the University of Texas Campus.
The University honored 165 people with close ties to the school that died last year.
The sound of the UT Tower Bell echoed across the Forty Acres - a reminder of those who have breathed life into the campus.
Friday, hundreds gathered beneath the UT tower. They were brought there by the shared experience of loss.
“The loss of a beloved family member, colleague student or friend,” said Latoya Hill, UT Cares Committee.
This annual ceremony at UT is appropriately called, UT Remembers.
Campus flags were lowered to half-staff in honor of the people who died this past year.
"William E. Rooster Andrews, Junior," announced one reader.
Each name was read aloud, followed by a toll of the bell.
Some of them were students -- others faculty or staff members.
All of them had close ties to this campus.
“Some have spent their entire professional careers here. Others have gone too early from us. Their lives unfinished and incomplete - all are family,” said William Powers, UT President.
Some names, like Claudia Alta Taylor - Lady Bird Johnson, were more recognizable than others -- but all are honored for their contributions to UT.
“We are better because they are part of us and they will forever be part of the heart and soul of the University of Texas at Austin,” said Hill.
