Elgin family may sue DPS after Christmas crash kills loved one
10:34 PM CDT on Friday, May 2, 2008
An Elgin family speaks out for the first time about a D.P.S. crash which took the life of the head of their family last December.
Walter Chabert, 62, if Elgin was riding his motorcycle home after a day of hanging Christmas lights with his grandchildren when he was killed December 8, 2007.
A D.P.S. accident report shows that Trooper Raymond Bradshaw failed to yield the right of way when he pulled his cruiser out in front of Chabert.
"I talked to my father everyday, my children talk to my father everyday....it's devastated us" says Larry Chabert, the victim's son.
The Chabert family and their attorney claim the D.P.S. has taken longer than usual to finalize the investigation.
"In all of this I have yet to hear from the Department of Public Safety as to an apology. I guess that's the part I'm a little angry about" says the victim's son.
The Chabert family and their attorney may decide to sue the D.P.S., a decision they have yet to make.
"My father's life was worth something. I think he's due the respect or the acknowledgement that it was not his fault" says Chabert.
