Driver hit, killed by SUV fleeing East Austin accident
05:29 PM CDT on Monday, May 5, 2008
Austin police are looking for a tan Chevrolet Tahoe with paper license plates after a fender bender turned into a fatal hit-and-run in East Austin over the weekend.
The Tahoe was headed west on Manor Road about 10 p.m. Friday when it rear-ended a Mazda pickup in which 28-year-old Jose Angel Fuentes-Reyes was riding. The pickup was stopped at the intersection of Manor Road and Airport Blvd., waiting to turn left onto Airport.
Fuentes-Reyes and others in the truck got out to see the damage and were calling police when the Tahoe backed up, then drove forward and drove away, grazing Fuentes-Reyes as it left.
He was taken to Brackenridge Hospital, where he died Saturday morning.
Police say they don't know whether he was struck accidentally or intentionally, and are asking anyone who knows anything about the wreck to call CrimeStoppers at 472-TIPS.
"Any witnesses that might have been driving by, anybody that might have heard something after the fact, them discussing what happened, any mechanic shop the last couple of days that might have taken in a Tahoe with front-end damage, anybody is a potential witness who can help us out," says Detective Adrian Duran.
Police are looking for a Tahoe with paper license plates. The two men in the Tahoe are described as African-American, both in the mid-20s, and both with short hair.
