Exclusive: Stray bullet strikes Hays County family's home
10:32 AM CDT on Friday, May 9, 2008
A stray bullet struck a Hays County family's home near Kyle Wednesday night, just one year after a boy was killed by a stray bullet just miles away.
"My daughter had nightmares last night. She kept waking up every two or three hours screaming," Rolando Garcia said about his 6-year-old daughter.
She and Garcia say they don't even feel safe during the day time. Their sense of security was shattered Wednesday evening around 7:30 by a stray bullet.
"I hear glass break. I thought a picture had (fallen)," Garcia said.
It was much worse. A bullet pierced the wall of Garcia's bathroom, shattering the shower window. It also went through his bedroom wall where it lodged in a speaker.
"My daughter was the first thing I thought about," Garcia said.
His second thought -- a little boy named Daniel Galicia. A stray bullet killed the 7-year-old last year. Deputies say the fatal bullet was fired from a neighbor who was target shooting in his backyard.
"It's not surprising. It's utterly predictable. It's an ongoing problem in our county," said Jeff Barton, Hays County Commissioner.
Barton proposed what he called "Daniel's Law" to ban hunting or target practice on rural lots smaller than two acres. County commissioners failed to approve it in March.
"It really was to address dangerous, reckless behavior in subdivisions," Barton said.
Garcia is now determined to push for it again.
"The ordinance is the main thing. Everything else can be replaced," Garcia said.
Barton plans to reintroduce the bill. He hopes this latest shooting incident will convince commissioners that something must be done.
