Austin paramedic adopts foster boys
05:49 PM CDT on Friday, May 9, 2008
Two children who had been abused or neglected and in state foster care for years were finally adopted Friday by an Austin paramedic.
Deven, 9, and Eithen, 11, are the newest additions to the Bancroft family.
In Travis County family court the boys told Judge Rhonda Hurley they wanted new last names -- and they wanted Christine Bancroft to be their mom.
The judge agreed.
"At this time, I find Ms. Bancroft, that all prerequisites have been met for you to adopt these two boys, and I grant your request to adopt these two boys. I will make you their mother forever and ever," said Hurley.
Eithen and Deven found their forever family after years of waiting in foster care.
Bancroft is a paramedic for the City of Austin who has changed her life to become a single mom.
Now she has changed the lives of two brothers.
"It shows you what moms do, people do -- families don't have to be the traditional two parent family, white picket fence, there's no income requirement. It's just somebody who's willing to make a commitment," said Tracy Eilers, Adoption Coalition of Texas
"I could've waited around for Mr. Right and start my own family, but I've been talking to other people that have been working with adoption and know that there are 3,500 kids in Texas that need homes and I thought, 'I have a good career, I have a good home - all I need to do is give some love, and I have plenty of that,'" said Bancroft.
Bancroft will be honored on Mother's Day during the fifth-annual salute to foster and adoptive moms' brunch hosted by the Renaissance Austin Hotel.
The ceremony recognizes the contributions moms make to the foster care system.
